Description
An account of the resource
The 80s saw the emergence of computer-generated imagery(CGI) within films. The first of which to feature large amounts of CGI scenes being "Tron"(1982), a movie perhaps more widely known for the arcade-cabinet game of the same name. Tron has a whopping 15 minutes of computer-generated sequences and is also one of the earliest examples of superimposing actors over CGI layers and backgrounds. The shot above is from Nick Castle's "The Last Starfighter", another prime example of directors utilizing CGI assets in lieu of complex and expensive set pieces.

Description
An account of the resource
The increase in state-of-the-art consumer-grade technology entering the market gave some filmmakers the inspiration to appeal to the Luddites of old. The shot above is from "Superman III"(1983) which features an evil corporate computer that turns people into androids as the main villain. The movie "War Games"(1983) portrays a high schooler trying to prevent the outbreak of a third world war after hacking into a military supercomputer under the assumption that it was a harmless game. Additionally, "Robocop"(1987) echos cyberpunk themes in its depiction of monitored cybernetics.
Less literal adaptations of the motif exist in other famous movies of the 80s, such as "Predator"(1987), in which a group of soldiers faces off against an ultra-technological alien hunter. Similarly to the blockbuster "Die Hard"(1988), the main protagonists are masculine figures who often rely on their MacGyver-esque(Also iconic 80s show in 1985) conventions than rely on newer technology.

Description
An account of the resource
Above is the time machine used in "Back to the Future", a retrofitted DeLorean DMC-12. Early on, the DMC-12 was marketed as an inexpensive sports car, unfortunately for DeLorean however, the number of presales for the car gave them the idea to hike their original 12k pricepoint up to almost double(Far beyond what the car is actually worth). Funnily enough, the inclusion of the DeLorean into "Back to the Future" is one of the primary reasons the car is still in popular culture today. While received as merely unremarkable in its time, it has been remembered by many car enthusiasts as cheaply made and much slower than their high-performance sports counterparts. Of course, the base model of the car wasn't fitted with Doc Brown's Flux Capacitor and other fictitious sci-fi inventions and could only reach speeds of around 60 mph after 10 seconds.

Description
An account of the resource
Rube Goldberg machines(which get their namesake from the cartoonist) feature a blend of simple machines meant to work in synchronicity to accomplish a task. From "The Goonies" to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", multiple 80s movies featured these machines. The implementation of these overly complicated machines adds brevity to the movie and provides a clever visual gag that can be appreciated by all ages of viewers. One of the most memorable and original Rube Goldberg machines shown in 80s movies comes from "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure", which does a great job at employing creative sight gags through the various toys and accessories littered throughout his house.

The picture is of a 1988 Discman made by Sony a few years after they made the Walkman. The Discman was just like the Walkman only it could play CDs. CDs first came out in 1982 and quickly became popular due to their slimmer appearance and easier to carry around. The Walkman and vinyl did not have good quality music which was one of the reasons CDs became popular in the ’80s. CDs produced a higher quality sound and helped musicians and artists explain music was more than notes and lyrics. With easy storage and better quality of sound, CDs quickly overtook the music industry. CDs are still used today and many people have CD players in their cars and houses and listen to music through them and have also paved the way for digital music libraries.

The Digital Sound Revolution was a shift away from mechanical technology to digital electronics such as the keyboard that was one of the most popular items used in music. This was the golden age for new music and the use of synthesizers. The keyboard had a wide range of sounds and could mock real instruments. This influenced modern music and how it is produced today, music today sounds digital with the use of synthesizers and other technological advancements made from the Digital Sound Revolutio.

The Walkman is a portable cassette player that can clip on your clothes and was not overwhelmingly big in size. This became popular in the early 1980s and allows people to listen to their favorite music and artists on the move. Now people could exercise and do homework listening to their own music and not disturb anyone else. This was a step away from vinyl records and not being able to listen to music when you are moving outside of your house or car. The Walkman is a revolutionary design that paved the way for modern iPods and iPhones to listen to music with.

How talk shows on the radio became popular in the 1980s
Description
An account of the resource
The image that is shown was taken in the 1980s and is of the two men responsible for the national known car talk show on the radio, Tom and Ray Magliozzi. The talk show Car Talk was not popular at first and was only on their local radio station WBUR-FM which was located in Boston, MA. Eventually, in 1987 the show got extremely popular over the radio and became a national broadcast all across the country. Car Talk was created by the two brothers and discussed car repairs and other automated things but with a twist of humor that made everyone love them. The 1980s was the era for radio talk shows and how to spread your message to people rather quickly, many talk shows were about politics and this began the idea of nationally addressing issues and bringing them into the light. Other channels including the conservative talk show radio, and liberal radio became wildly popular during this time. This has led to many talk shows being on the radio today and how each show touches on issues and brings to light their opinions like the FOX radio channel.

What changed with vinyl records
Description
An account of the resource
The picture shows all of the vinyl's that WBAP- Tv station in Texas had and would use during air time in 1971. Vinyl records have been around since 1948 and have revolutionized the way people use to listen to music in their homes. Vinyl record players were very popular and could be found in several homes throughout the United States. The records were fragile and bulky even in the 1980s but it was still an important piece of technology. Vinyl records have influenced how we listen to our music today. Records were the first giant CD that had multiple songs on it that could be played anytime you wanted to listen to it, you could also “skip” songs by picking up the needle and moving it to the next line down. This has led to modern stereo players and other musical devices used to listen to songs.
